TRAVEL SOCCER PROGRAM SUMMARY 

     If you think your child is interested in playing a more competitive level of soccer or that they might want to play soccer in high school some day, then you should consider Lakewood Soccer Association’s (LSA) travel soccer program.  Many LSA travel players go on to play soccer at the high school level.  Travel soccer is open to any boy or girl 7-14 years old that shows talent and a desire to play more competitive soccer.  The boys start with an Under-8 (U08) league and the girls start with an Under-9 (U09) league.

     Like our Saturday Soccer program, travel players have fun while they learn.  However, the travel player gets the benefit of certified coaches who take the travel player’s game to the next level. Often the difference between a talented athlete and a great soccer player is technical skills. LSA travel provides the professionally certified staff that will ensure each player has the opportunity to learn the required soccer skills to improve both as an individual player as well as learning tactics that make them better team players. Our teams represent Lakewood in both home and away games, as well as in tournaments.  There are eight games per season, with half being played at home in Lakewood. Tournaments are in addition to the season. Away games are within Northeastern Ohio and travel time is rarely more than 35 minutes each way.  Games are played primarily on Sundays, weather permitting.

     PLEASE NOTE:  Travel Soccer is a FALL AND SPRING commitment!  We understand that your kids may be playing other sports or be involved in other activities; however, in fairness to the other players on the team, it’s important that players honor their commitment which means showing up to games, team practices and footskills (technical skills).

 GENERAL INFORMATION AND FEES

     The registration fee is $220, which includes fall and spring seasons and must be paid in full before the start of the fall season. All forms, along with the $120 deposit (fully applied to the $220 registration fee per player), are due no later than your assigned tryout timeslot (see below).  Tryouts will be held on May 13th for boys and May 17th for girls.  Make-up tryouts will be May 20^nd. Teams will be made and announcements sent by email by the end of June. 

     Player uniforms, cleats and shin guards are NOT included in player registration.  Uniform fee is $55 and includes a custom made, numbered jersey, shorts and socks. 

     The registration fee covers the following:

1. Fall and Spring league plays 8 games each season, for a total of 16 games.
2. One team practice each week with coach (usually 10 per season).
3. One Footskills/Foundations practice each week with a licensed soccer professional (10 per season).
4. Discounted week-long summer camp for travel players only.
5. Goal Keeper Clinics.
6. LSA contributes $50 per season/per team for pre-approved tournaments.
7. Travel players receive a 50% discount on Saturday Soccer fees.
8. Lots of fun and lots of great soccer!

NOTICE TO ALL LSA SATURDAY SOCCER PARENTS:

LSA is seeking volunteers to join the committee to run Saturday Soccer beginning this fall. Saturday Soccer commissioner Scott Suttell has held the job for most of the last eight years and no longer will oversee the program with the conclusion of the spring season.

This is a great opportunity for you to step up your involvement in the organization. It is rewarding work for people who are committed to LSA and want to play a role in making Lakewood a great place to live.

Ideally, we’d like to get 10-12 people to volunteer to split up the duties involved with running Saturday Soccer. Those duties are as follows:

1. Prepare and distribute registration forms

2. Set in-person signup sessions (two per season)

3. Staff in-person registrations (two per season)

4. Set referee briefings (one per season)

5. Referee scheduling

6. Set and conduct coaches meeting (one per season)

7. Prepare all documentation for coaches meeting

8. Run the concession stand on Saturday mornings

9. Prepare volunteer schedules (field setup, concession stand, etc.) for fall and spring seasons

10. Oversee, with the help of a registrar, player registrations and team formation

11. Handle calls and emails from parents with questions, particularly regarding registration and team placement

12. Set the schedule for footskills and U5-U6 FUNdamentals

13. Email rosters to coaches

14. Send weekly emails with league updates to coaches

15. Email team assignments to parents

16. Oversee special events, such as Picture Day, Food Drive, etc.

17. Order medals/season-ending awards

18. Update the website with Saturday Soccer material, including last-minute cancellations

19. Establish a trailer schedule to pull the trailer to and from Memorial Field each Saturday

20. Oversee the distribution and ordering of equipment

21. Maintain a presence at Memorial Field from 7:30 a.m. (field setup) to 1:30 p.m. (field teardown) each Saturday.

New!  A MESSAGE TO BEGINNING COACHES

Here at Lakewood Soccer Association we are pleased you have volunteered to coach a youth team. Most of you, we are sure, just can?t wait to start. However, for a few of you this is probably your first encounter with soccer coaching and you are understandably very apprehensive about the season ahead.

Coaching young children is a challenge in patience and understanding. As a youth coach there is a danger that you may be more interested in teaching what you know than the children are in learning what you have to offer. Young children (U6-U8) are really more concerned about having fun and being in a happy environment than they are in learning how to become good soccer players. By creating an atmosphere on the practice field that is conducive to learning, both you and your players will have a fun and rewarding experience.

If you have ever watched a good elementary school teacher, especially a good gym teacher, you will notice that his or her success in teaching depends a great deal upon their ability to create the proper learning environment. The children are comfortable, having fun and not feeling threatened. The children are under control and interested in what they are being taught. The fact that the teacher is well prepared, organized, knows the subject matter and communicates effectively is equally important. These are the factors that go to make a proper learning environment.

After completing an appropriate introductory course, such as the U6-8 or U9-12 Module, and have coached for a season or more, you may discover the joy of helping young children and decide to continue in this role. If this is the case, give a thought to your own growth and development as a coach. Since you obviously care about your players and want a good experience for them, you need to allocate time and effort towards your own development as a coach.

Enroll in coaching courses and attend as many clinics as possible. Watch the highest level of soccer available in your area, either live or on TV. Read coaching books and study videos. All these activities will help add to your soccer knowledge and effectiveness as a coach.

Here are some healthy, high-energy food-and-drink essentials to put in your running bag:

3-Step Pre-Play Drinking System a.k.a ? The Water Brigade?

Consider trying the following drinking routine at practice.   If it works, you can use if before games, varying the amount of water depending on how much you can comfortably tolerate.

2 hours before game: 10 ounces of water
1 hour before game: 10 ounces of water
Pre-Game15-20 minutes before game: 4 ounces of water
Every 15-20 minutes during play: 4 ounces (depending on weather)
Post-Game
Total water consumption: 24 ounces
